Who we support

Learning Disabilities

We support individuals with a variety of different disabilities, these could be mild, moderate, severe, profound or an individual that has multiple disabilities. This means that our staff are trained and well equipped for supporting each individual in a person-centred way, ensuring their rights, choice and independence are maintained. We do this, through robust care and support planning, regular reviews to each individual’s needs and working in partnership with families and other agencies, which ensures the support provided is the least restrictive and most effective. We enable and encourage individuals with a learning disability to play an active role within society, to build their self-esteem and confidence. We do this through promoting social inclusion and encouraging new activities to ensure each individual as the opportunity to become involved in something new. We understand that each individual has their own goals and aspirations and we support each person to reach positive outcomes, whilst ensuring and maintaining positive risk taking.

Autism

As well as supporting individuals with a learning disability, we also support those with Autism. We recognise that these individuals may have a diagnosis of a learning disability alongside their Autism and strive to deliver outstanding care to each person to enable them to live a safe and happy life within the community. Our staff are highly experienced and trained in supporting individuals with Autism and other associated needs. We understand the importance of implementing and maintaining coping strategies for those who may experience anxiety or distress as a result of their Autism. We do this, through embedding Positive Behaviour Support within a person’s care and support package to enable them to achieve their goals and aspirations.

Mental Health issues

At Safe Sanctuary Living we recognise that at any one time 1 in 4 of us can suffer with a diagnosable mental health issue, and suicide in the number one cause of death in adults between the ages of 15 -49-year olds. We recognise that the Coronavirus pandemic has placed an unprecedented stress on all of us – however this can be intolerable to individuals already struggling to cope with their enduring mental health needs. The fear of the virus on one’s health, added complications to shopping and accessing community services, in addition to isolation, separation from family, friends and our usual support networks have exacerbated the symptoms of mental ill health. We are therefore keen to promote our mental health services – offering both supported living and community outreach. We are passionate about delivering a meaningful service by trained and experience staff to those individuals in our local communities that are struggling with their mental wellbeing and are keen help challenge the stigma of mental illness and mental health issues.

Additional Needs

We recognise that as well as a learning disability and Autism, some individuals may experience additional health needs to which they require further support to manage. We offer our support to those who may require a significant amount of support in these areas and understand the complexities of this. We offer support to those who may have a physical health needs, such as mobility issues, and also those who may have mental health needs. Our staff are highly skilled and trained to support people with a dual diagnosis, which means the placement can be as successful as possible for each person.

Behaviours that challenge

At Safe Sanctuary Living, we adopt the least restrictive measures to ensure the best outcomes for each individual. We understand that some individuals with complex needs may struggle to communicate their wishes and feelings effectively, which may result in behaviours that challenge. These behaviours that challenge could be both verbal or physical, to which our staff are highly skilled and trained to prevent and safely manage. We use proactive strategies in the way of positive behaviour support to ensure we adopt safe practice and embed restraint reduction standards within the support we deliver. We also look to ensure we promote the principles of stopping over medication of people with a learning disability, Autism or both (STOMP) within our services. We follow the guidelines shared by the NHS and ensure we meet the requirements set out by the Care Quality Commission and Local Authorities. We recognise that at times the proactive use of medications may be required to support individuals at times of high anxiety, however, we aim to reduce this as set out within the guidelines.

Our Pathways "Supported Living"

Here at Safe Sanctuary Living, we provide bespoke services to meet individual need. This means we shape the home environment and seek appropriate accommodation options with a focus on environmental aspects that may otherwise cause difficulties for people with Autism, learning disabilities and complex needs. This involves comprehensive housing and environmental assessments and bespoke Supported Living packages within a protected tenancy. Whilst we understand the need for solo provisions for some individuals, we also promote shared living to enable each person to have the opportunity to socialise. We do this using our thorough assessment tool, which helps us to match the compatibility of each person, to ensure their home environment is both safe and comforting. We provide flexible support to meet the needs of each individual and aim to reduce this over time to increase and promote independence. As well as this, we are able to quickly increase support should the need arise to ensure the safety of all involved.

We understand that the people we support may, at times, experiences a number of difficulties which, in the past, may have led to placement breakdown. However, we aim to work in partnership with these agencies to implement a robust package of care, that meets the specific needs of that individual at that time. We also ensure these measures are time specific and aim to reduce the amount of support or measures, if it is safe to do so, to ensure the least restrictive care is available to that individual.
